The Visian ICL (Implantable Collamer® Lens) is a state-of-the-art solution that’s ideal for anyone with the need or desire for quality vision correction. Produced by STAAR® Surgical Company, the Visian ICL has numerous advantages including its correction of the widest range of myopia, or “nearsightedness.”
Typically used to treat:
· Higher prescription Myopia
o Higher than -10.00 diopters
What is Visian ICL?
There’s a big difference between “visual acuity” (20/20 vision is considered normal visual acuity) and “visual quality.” The Visian ICL provides sharper, clearer, and more vivid vision, with greater depth and dimension. It’s called High Definition Visian, and it’s available only with the Visian ICL.
STAAR Surgical Company's Visian ICL has a proven track record of providing improved quality of vision. When compared to other refractive surgical procedures, the Visian ICL creates sharper vision. The immediate improvement of vision quality and the remarkably short and painless recovery produces a unique "WOW!" factor in patients.
The "High Definition Vision” delivered by the Visian ICL makes this proven, technologically advanced vision correction procedure the choice for patients who need and expect high quality results. In fact, the U.S. military has embraced the Visian ICL because of the reliable visual clarity it achieves. The Visian ICL is clearly the choice for patients with an active lifestyle and those who cannot accept anything less than the highest quality vision.
If you can’t settle for "good enough" vision and demand “High Definition Visian,” the Visian ICL is clearly the refractive procedure choice for you.
How does Visian ICL work?
The Visian ICL surgical procedure is simple and painless. The implantation procedure for the Visian ICL involves a procedure similar to that of cataract surgery. The main difference is that, unlike cataract surgery, the Visian ICL procedure does not require the removal of the eye's crystalline lens.
One to Two Weeks before the Visian ICL Eye Procedure
About one to two weeks prior to the insertion of the Visian ICL, Dr. Lin will perform a YAG laser iridotomy. During this procedure, Dr. Lin will use a YAG laser to make one or two small openings near the edge of your iris, which is the colored part of the eye. These openings serve as outlets that will allow the fluid in your eye to circulate around the lens.
Prior to creating the small openings in the eye with the laser, Dr. Lin will apply numbing drops to make the procedure more comfortable. Dr. Lin will then prescribe eye drops for you to use during the weeks leading up to the Visian ICL procedure.
Day of the Visian ICL Procedure
The entire procedure for the implantation of the Visian ICL will take about 15 to 30 minutes. Most patients say it is relatively painless because of the numbing agents used. Someone will need to drive you home following the procedure
On the day of your procedure, prior to surgery, Dr. Lin will administer topical anesthesia to minimize discomfort, however you may still feel pressure in your eye. Additionally, you may or may not be given a sedative.
Lens Positioning Openings
Once you are comfortable, Dr. Lin will begin the procedure. First, Dr. Lin will create one or two small openings at the base of your cornea that will be used to position the lens.
Next, a gel-like substance will be placed inside your eye to protect the eye during lens placement. This gel will be removed at the end of the procedure.
Following placement of the gel, a small opening will be made, through which the lens will be inserted.
Insertion of Corrective Lens
Prior to the Visian ICL procedure, your corrective lens was selected based on your individual prescription. The lens was folded and loaded into a small cartridge which will now be placed through the opening. As the lens is inserted, it will gently unfold in your eye. Once the lens has fully unfolded, the four corners of the lens will be placed behind your iris. This makes the lens invisible to both you and others.
Completion of Procedure
To complete the procedure, Dr. Lin will administer eye drops to help prevent infection and inflammation. You will continue to use these drops for several days after your procedure.
Because the incision made during surgery is so small, sutures are typically not needed following the Visian ICL procedure. For comfort and protection, Dr. Lin may cover the eye with a patch or shield and prescribe drops or medication.
You should not drive immediately after the Visian ICL surgery, so it is important that you arrange for transportation home.
Follow-Up Care after the Visian ICL Procedure
Within 24 hours of undergoing the Visian ICL surgery, you will have a follow-up visit. Dr. Lin will monitor the eye's internal pressure and will discuss your progress.
Patients need to follow physician instructions, especially regarding the needed use of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medications during the week following the procedure.
Patients should contact IQ Laser Vision immediately if they experience severe eye pain or a sudden decrease in vision.
Improved vision may be evident the same day as the Visian ICL procedure, and you can expect a quick visual recovery.

What are the benefits of ICL?
Patients seek the Visian ICL because they expect the highest quality of results from their refractive vision correction procedure. The advantages of our phakic IOL make the Visian ICL a sought after treatment for nearsightedness with or without astigmatism* and farsightedness*.
· High quality of vision
o Due to its unique anti-reflective properties and high water content, Collamer helps transmit light nearly identically to the human crystalline lens. This means less light is reflected within the eye, leading to sharper, clearer vision; and far fewer occurrences of glare, halos, or poor night vision associated with other lenses or corrective procedures. These are the precise qualities of High Definition Visian, available only from the Visian ICL.
· Wide treatment range
o In comparison to other refractive procedures, the Visian ICL offers the widest treatment range for treating myopia (as low as -3.00 diopters to as high as -20.00 diopters).
· The “Wow” Factor
o After a simple 15-minute outpatient procedure, patients experience an immediate improvement in vision quality and are “Wowed” by the results. In fact, over 99% of patients were satisfied with the Visian ICL procedure.
· Short Recovery Time
o Because the Visian ICL is foldable, only a small opening is required during the procedure (3mm or 1/10 inch). This feature makes the procedure efficient and dramatically reduces healing time. In fact, the Visian ICL offers full recovery typically in 1-2 days, with minimal discomfort.
o The Visian ICL is inserted into the eye by an ophthalmologist through a small, micro opening. If your vision changes dramatically, however, the Visian ICL can be removed from the eye by a simple surgical procedure without permanent damage.
· Protection against harmful UV exposure
o As an added feature, the Visian ICL advanced lens material contains a UV blocker that actually prevents harmful UVA and UVB rays from entering the eye, possibly preventing the development of UV-related eye disorders. Long-term exposure to UV radiation can damage the eyes; longer term or more intense exposure increase the chance of eye disorders including the development of cataracts and some retinal problems.
o The placement of the Visian ICL into the posterior chamber of the eye makes the lens invisible to both the patient and any observer.
· Advanced Lens Material: Collamer
o Used exclusively by STAAR Surgical Company, made from collagen; which is a substance that naturally occurs in the body. This makes the lens highly compatible with the eye’s natural physiology (high biocompatibility).
o Collamer transmits light very similarly to your natural lens because the material’s characteristics are nearly identical to the human crystalline lens
· Proven track record
o Implanted in over 125,000 eyes worldwide, the safety and amazing improvement in vision quality of the Visian ICL has been proven over the last 15 years.

What you can expect?
Prior to being placed on the market, the Visian ICL was subject to extensive research and development. Today, more than 40,000 people worldwide enjoy the benefits of the device. In US clinical study, over 99 percent of patients were satisfied with their implant. The Visian ICL has a track record of stable, consistently excellent clinical outcomes. The lens has been available internationally for over 15 years.
What are the risks of Visian ICL?

All risks are discussed and addressed before, during and after the procedure. IQ Laser Vision is dedicated to answering any and all questions you may have to ensure complete conformability and proper expectations with the procedure.
FAQs about Visian ICL
Q: Does it hurt?
A: No, most patients state that they are very comfortable throughout the procedure. Your ophthalmologist will use topical anesthetic drops prior to the procedure and may choose to administer a light sedative as well.
Q: What is the Visian ICL made of?
A: The Visian ICL is made of Collamer®, a highly biocompatible advanced lens material which contains a small amount of purified collagen. Collamer does not cause a reaction inside the eye and it contains an ultraviolet blocker that provides protection to the eye. Collamer is a material proprietary to STAAR Surgical Company.
Q: What if my vision changes after I receive the Visian ICL?
A: One advantage of the Visian ICL is that it offers treatment flexibility. If your vision changes dramatically after receiving the implant, your surgeon can remove and replace it. If necessary, another procedure can be performed at any time.
Patients can wear glasses or contact lenses as needed following treatment with the Visian ICL. The implant does not treat presbyopia (difficulty with reading in people 40 and older), but you can use reading glasses as needed after
Q: Can the Visian ICL be removed from my eye?
A: Although the Visian ICL is intended to remain in place permanently, a qualified ophthalmologist can remove the implant if necessary.
Q: Is the Visian ICL visible to others?
A: No. The Visian ICL is positioned behind the iris (the colored part of the eye), where it is invisible to both you and observers. Only your surgeon will be able to tell that vision correction has taken place.
Q: Will I be able to feel the Visian ICL once it’s in place?
A: The Visian ICL is designed to be completely unobtrusive after it is put in place. It stays in position by itself and does not interact with any of the eye’s structures.
