Meet Dr. Scott Hyver

Dr. Scott Hyver built his practice on a single conviction: great surgical outcomes begin long before the laser is switched on. For more than 20 years he performed specialised laser vision correction procedures across the Bay Area, including Wavefront-Optimized All-Laser LASIK, ZEISS SMILE and customised PRK, and he stayed personally involved at every stage of pre-operative care.

Dr. Hyver prioritized meeting patients during the initial consultation. By personally reviewing prescription data, corneal topography and diagnostic imaging, he ensured that each treatment plan was meticulously tailored to the individual eye rather than following a standard protocol.

His safety standards were equally deliberate. Dr. Hyver required every patient to undergo a dilated pre-operative examination before any procedure, confirming the retina and internal structures were healthy and sound. Many practices treat that exam as optional. He considered it non-negotiable, and it is one reason patients and referring optometrists across Santa Clara, San Jose, Daly City and San Ramon sent him their most complex cases.

He founded the Santa Clara practice in 2000, two blocks from what is now Levi’s Stadium, and grew it into a three-office Bay Area practice serving Silicon Valley, San Francisco and the East Bay.

Special Medical Advisor and Consultant

Dr. Hyver no longer performs surgery or sees patients directly. He serves IQ Laser Vision as Special Medical Advisor and Consultant, a role that puts his 25 years of refractive experience behind the practice rather than in the operating room.

In this capacity he contributes to the areas that defined his own practice:

  • Clinical protocol and standards. Advising on pre-operative evaluation requirements, including the mandatory dilated exam he made standard at ScottHyver Visioncare.
  • Surgeon mentorship. Working with the IQ Laser Vision surgical team, including the surgeons he personally selected to care for his former patients.
  • Technology assessment. Evaluating platforms and procedure options, informed by four generations of excimer lasers and three generations of femtosecond lasers across his career.
  • Complex case consultation. Serving as a second set of eyes on difficult candidacy questions, thin corneas and enhancement decisions.
  • Continuity of care. Ensuring former ScottHyver Visioncare patients experience the same standards under the combined practice.

A LASIK Surgeon Who Is Also a LASIK Patient

Few refractive surgeons can describe the procedure from the operating chair as well as the operating console. Dr. Hyver can.

He underwent LASIK himself in his mid-30s to relieve chronic asthenopia, the eye strain and fatigue that comes from long hours of close focus. Years later, as presbyopia began affecting his near vision in his 40s, he underwent a flap-lift enhancement. He has publicly chronicled both experiences in the ophthalmic press, including Ocular Surgery News, describing not only the excellent distance and near outcomes but also the honest reality that recovery is not always entirely discomfort-free.

That perspective shaped how he counselled patients, and it shapes how he advises surgeons now. He sets expectations plainly, explains what the first 24 hours actually feel like, and never oversells a result. Having moved through four generations of excimer lasers and three generations of femtosecond lasers as both surgeon and patient, he understands the technology’s progress from a vantage point almost no one else in the field shares.

Your Care Continues

Dr. Hyver stepped back from clinical practice at the end of 2025 and now advises IQ Laser Vision rather than treating patients directly. In his own words, patients remain in excellent hands with the surgeons he personally selected and trusts.

ScottHyver Visioncare, in conjunction with IQ Laser Vision, continues to care for both new and existing patients and continues to maintain access to patient medical records. The Santa Clara, San Ramon and Daly City offices remain open under the same standards he established: comprehensive pre-operative evaluation, surgeon-led consultations and personalised surgical planning. The IQ Laser Vision team brings more than 100 years of combined experience, operates the number one ZEISS SMILE and EVO ICL centre in the country, and invests continually inthe diagnostic and laser platforms behind those outcomes.

Outside the Clinic

Away from the practice, Dr. Hyver enjoys spending time with his family, playing soccer and, unsurprisingly, watching the 49ers.
