An Interview with Dr. Robert T. Lin at IQ Laser Vision

Helping others obtain their best vision is what we’re known for at IQ Laser Vision . But we’re more than just your typical eye care facility. We’re a team of world-renowned ophthalmologists and vision specialists who really, truly care about our patients and their experiences. And we care because we’ve been there ourselves.

We caught up with our founder, Dr. Robert T. Lin, pioneer of the Micro-LASIK® procedure (and former LASIK patient himself!) to ask a few questions about his experience and passion, and advice for those considering LASIK themselves.

Without further adieu, meet Dr. Lin.

What is your experience and background in LASIK and vision correction?

When I was a medical student, I wore contacts. During those long days, my contacts would dry out, or worse, pop off. I would have to find them, wash them under water and put them back into my eyes. I relied on my contacts for seeing and was unable to function without them. That’s when I decide to get LASIK.

I was so happy with my results and knew, without a doubt, that it was the best decision I’d ever make. It changed my life so much that I decided that I wanted to help others achieve the same results—and vision transformation. I dedicated my entire career to specializing in vision correction procedures and techniques.

Was vision always your passion, and if not, how did you happen down that path?

Vision became my passion while in medical school, following my LASIK procedure. I dedicated my entire career to improving my technique so I could improve others’ eyesight. I developed the Micro-LASIK® procedure to improve recovery time and results. At my practice, we always strive to provide everyone with the best possible treatment to achieve the best possible results. We do this by keeping up with technology and adopting (and sometimes creating) the most advanced procedures.

What are the biggest misconceptions about LASIK?

There are plenty of myths out there about LASIK. But the biggest misconception is that you can go blind from LASIK, which is simply not true. LASIK procedures are done on the surface of the eye, and that’s not where your vision comes from. No one in the U.S. has ever gone blind from LASIK.

What advice would you give to someone seeking to improve vision?

My advice to anyone considering vision correction is to schedule a free, no obligation consultation to discuss the best procedures for them. Being scared of vision correction procedures is normal when you don’t know what to expect. But coming in for a consultation can give you the information you need to make the best decision, and give you the confidence to take the next step toward your best vision.

What are the benefits of LASIK correction?

LASIK has so many benefits. One of the top benefits it that it eliminates the need to rely on other solutions like glasses or contact to see properly. But LASIK isn’t always the best solution for everyone, which is why it’s so important to have an eye evaluation and consultation from the start.

Every person’s vision and eyes are different. This is why we offer so many different types of procedures at our clinics. During the free consultation, we determine and recommend the best possible procedure based on a patient’s prescription, eye condition and age. If a person isn’t a good candidate for LASIK, we always recommend wearing glasses because contacts can lead to eye infections. And those eye infections can escalate and result in blindness. Too often, contact lens wearers don’t follow the proper guidelines for use.

What kind of eye conditions and patients can benefit from LASIK?

We have treated people across the age spectrum. Oftentimes they have been as young as 18 or well over 60 years old. Our corrective procedures are beneficial for people who are nearsighted, farsighted or for those who have astigmatism or cataracts. Our team also specializes in dry eye treatments and a number of other corrective eye procedures in the event that LASIK isn’t the best option.

Can you share a story of a client you’ve helped? What was their story, and what did you do for them?

Every day, it’s our great joy to help people achieve their visual freedom. This particular testimony from a prior patient touched us because it expressed what many of us have experienced ourselves while living life behind lenses. His letter follows:

Thank you so much for helping me with my eyes. I’m glad I came to the right place! Before my procedure, I felt like a man without a criminal record who had been unjustly imprisoned for almost 15 years. With your help, after just 30 minutes I became a free man. My four pairs of glasses are now in the trash. So once again, I want to give a big ‘thank you’ to your staff.
