What Is LRI
Limbal Relaxing Incision, or LRI, is a procedure in which partial thickness incisions are made at the corneal periphery (edge of the cornea) in order to treat corneal astigmatism. The small incisions “relax” the curvature of the cornea and improve its ability to focus light. The goal of the procedure is to leave the patient with as little astigmatism as possible.
How Does LRI Work?
Depending on the level of your astigmatism, our surgeons will determine the best LRI technique for your particular case. The general steps involved in an LRI procedure are outlined below.
Step 1: Based on extensive pre-operative tests, Dr. Lin “marks” the cornea using a special instrument designed for making orientation “marks.”
Step 2: Using a specialized instrument small incision(s) are made in the cornea to improve the refine the curvature of the cornea
Step 3: The eye is covered and protected
What are the Benefits of LRI?
LRI optimizes the function of intraocular lenses (IOL) in order to achieve a wider range of vision correction. It is the more commonly preferred method to treat astigmatism in IOL users. The procedure has a proven track record of safety with rare complications.
The visual recovery from an LRI procedure is also typically very quick. LRI is also a more economical alternative than LASIK to treat astigmatism with effective results.
