Imagine if you could correct your nearsightedness and reduce your dependency on corrective lenses (glasses and contact lenses)… while you sleep! It might sound far-fetched, but it's a reality for many people.
It's called Orthokeratology, or Ortho-K, and it is available at IQ Laser Vision. With an increase in the public demand for vision correction, Ortho-K is a great, non-surgical, low-risk option to help improve vision. Take back the freedom to play sports, go swimming, and live your life without the restrictions of daily-use corrective lenses.
Nighttime treatment. Daytime freedom.
Typically used to treat:
· Myopia progression (worsening)
What is Orthokeratology (Ortho-K)?
Orthokeratology is the design and unique fitting of special gas permeable contact lenses that gently reshape the cornea while you sleep, so that you can see clearly after you remove the lenses when you wake-up.
The FDA-approval of overnight wear of corneal reshaping lenses has made Ortho-K much more convenient and has led to a surge in its popularity. With overnight Ortho-K, all corneal reshaping takes place while you sleep, and no corrective lenses are needed during the day.
Each lens is designed specifically for the needs of your eye by a highly-trained, experienced doctor. The lenses are designed to gently reshape the cornea in order for light to refract more accurately onto the retina. The lenses are made a unique material that is designed for overnight wear and provides greater oxygen permeability.
How does Ortho-K work?
Overnight Ortho-K: Corneal Reshaping while you sleep
The Ortho-K process is simple. Ortho-K utilizes specially-designed rigid-gas permeable contact lenses to be worn at night and removed each morning. The specially designed lenses are worn each night, while you sleep, and are designed to allow oxygen to your eyes. Because nearsightedness is caused because the cornea is too steep, it needs to be slightly “flattened” in order to refract light properly. The special design of the lens gently reshapes the elastic tissue of the cornea providing a more optimal curvature.
When you wake-up, the lenses are removed and the eye holds its new proper corneal shape throughout the day. You are able to experience clear vision and freedom from corrective lenses. Your eye will typically hold its shape for about 14 hours, before gradually returning to its original shape.
What are the benefits of Ortho-K?
· Eliminate the need for glasses and conventional contact lenses during the day
· Slows the progression of myopia (nearsightedness)
· Freedom to enjoy activities limited by the need for corrective lenses:
o Dusty environments (that would typically irritate conventional contact wearers)
· Completely non-surgical
· Therapy is done at night, while you sleep
· Safe, effective and reversible
· FDA approved
· Reduced sensation of lens awareness while blinking because its worn during sleep
Who is a candidate for Ortho-K?
Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) is for healthy individuals of any age who are nearsighted.
· Age: All Ages
o Ortho-K is ideal for individuals who are too young for LASIK
· Vision Prescription: up to -8.50
o Ortho-K typically treats individuals up to -4.50 but IQ Laser Vision utilizes the latest technology in order to help treat patients with prescriptions up to -8.50!
· Ortho-K can also help treat individual with low astigmatism – up to -1.50 D cylinder
· Ortho-K is perfect for individuals with increasingly worsening vision (controls myopia progression)
o Ortho-K slows your nearsightedness; Corrective lenses do not slow the progression and allows your vision to worsen which will cost you more in the long-term
There may be times when IQ Laser Vision may need to turn away patients because they are not a good candidate for the procedure because our number one concern is not the number of patients we bring in but the quality of care and high level of service we provide. That is why it is important to come in for our FREE CONSULTATION, in order for IQ Laser Vision to determine your candidacy and provide the best vision correction options for you.
What results can you expect from Ortho-K?
The goal for every Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) patient is to aim for 20/20 vision after Ortho-K and corneal refractive therapy, but 20/40 vision (the legal minimum for driving in most of the United States) is typically considered acceptable.
In the FDA clinical study for approval of Paragon CRT lenses, 93 percent of patients achieved 20/32 vision or better, and 67 percent achieved 20/20 or better. In the clinical study for FDA approval of one VST design, about 95 percent achieved 20/40 or better, and 73 percent achieved 20/20 or better. Both studies followed patients over at least a nine-month period.
What are the risks of Ortho-K?
Ortho-K poses very little risk to the patient. The most prevalent risk is eye discomfort and potential infection, due to poor hygiene and lens care. This risk is typical of conventional contact lens use and with proper hygiene can be completely avoided. The effects of the Ortho-K lenses are completely reversible. By discontinuing use of the lenses, the cornea will naturally return to its pre-treatment shape with no long-term effects.Ortho-K treatment will not affect your ability to get LASIK in the future.
All risks are discussed and addressed before, during and after the procedure. IQ Laser Vision is dedicated to answering any and all questions you may have to ensure complete conformability and proper expectations with the procedure.

FAQs about Ortho-K
Q: How long does Ortho-K take to see results?
A: In most cases results can be seen after only a few days of use, however results depend on each individual case. For individuals with higher myopia, results make take slightly longer.
Q: What causes the progression of myopia (nearsightedness gets worse)?
A: There are a number of activities that cause your nearsightedness to get worse – such as close-up tasks, reading, computer usage. Children are most affected because of the amount of close-up tasks they perform. Some children experience increases in prescription multiple times a years and in amounts greater than 0.50 diopters.
Q: How many years has Ortho-K been in the market?
A: Ortho-K was initially developed in cooperation with pilots. It has been approved since 1964 for daily-use. It wasn’t until 1996 that new material was developed to increase oxygen-permeability. With the new material, patients are now able to wear the lenses while they sleep! Which means Ortho-K patients are able to enjoy clear vision without the use of lenses during the day. The lenses have also evolved their design in order to treat higher levels of myopia – up to -8.50 d!
Q: Would repeated use of the Ortho-K lenses cause any corneal scratches?
A: Ortho-K lenses are very similar to typical hard contact lenses (gas-permeable). There should no scratches on the cornea as a direct result of lens use. If any scratches occur they should heal. Any changes to the corneal shape are completely reversible. Once you remove the lenses the cornea will begin returning to its original shape. Vision should remain clear for 12-16 hours.
Q: How hard is it to maintain the Ortho-K lenses?
A: Ortho-K lenses are very similar to typical hard contact lenses (gas-permeable). Maintaining proper hygiene is important but not difficult. At IQ Laser Vision you will learn everything you need to know on lens handling and maintenance; and be provided reference material.
